This 4 day camp, held in mid-August, provides children with developmental disorders and/or special learning disorders, their parents, and their siblings with the unique opportunity to experience the magic of summer camp in a warm, welcoming environment. This is the only camp of its kind in Canada.
Countdown to Camp
Shabbat Shalom from YCC. This week’s Shabbat Shalom greeting comes from Carly Berlin, Director of Youth and Family Engagement at the Sylvan Adams Ym-Ywha:
This week’s Parasha tells the story of Korach’s rebellion after being denied entry into the priesthood; which he felt entitled to as the nephew of Aaron, Moses’ brother, who was Kohen Gadol (high priest). He questions the leadership of Moses and Aaron, and rallies two hundred and fifty others to agree with him. They all bring special offerings to the Mishkan to try and prove their worth to become Kohanim (priests). It is then that God gets involved, opening up the earth, which swallows Korach and his followers, leaving no doubt whose leadership God supports.
At first glance, this Parasha seems to suggest that questioning the leadership of those in power will get you swallowed up by the earth – but the Torah is full of stories of people legitimately questioning authority when they feel it is unjust, so it can’t be that simple. In this case, it’s important to look at why Korach was questioning Moses and Aaron’s leadership, which helps explain God’s intervention in this case. Many scholars argue that Korach was selfish, looking for ways to elevate his status, ganging up on others, and trying to take what he feels entitled to – some may even say he was kvetching. This sounds like a bully – and we shouldn’t be caving to people who try to get what they want by making others feel small.
This Shabbat, think about how you stand up to people who may try to belittle you to get what they want. How can you respond productively? ... See MoreSee Less
