For students in grade ten, this 7 ½ week program gives our teenagers the tools they need to become future leaders and staff at YCC. The Sr. CITs participate in three 5-day placements as assistants to the counsellors, and travel to Boston for 4 days. Another highlight of the program is the production of an original CIT play and writing their own “Alma Mater” song.
Countdown to Camp
Shabbat Shalom from YCC. This week's greeting comes to us from Rabbi Sherril Gilbert founder and spiritual leader of B’nai Or Montreal Community Shul, and Executive Director of ALEPH Canada: The Alliance for Jewish Renewal. She is also a co-founder of Montreal Open Shul.
On the Jewish calendar, we are now in a period of being attentive to time. Each night, for the forty-nine days between Passover and Shavuot, we perform a ritual – actually a mitzvah - called Counting the Omer. Beginning on the second night of Passover, we start the count by saying “today is the first day of the Omer.” When we arrive at the seventh day, we add the calculation of the weeks, saying, “Today is the seventh day, which is one week of the Omer.” We continue counting each day and each week until we reach Shavuot.
This mitzvah – considered a mitzvah for all generations – can be seen as an invitation to us to become more mindful, more appreciative and more grateful for what we have, one day at a time. Limnot yameinu, teaches Psalm 90, reminding us to treasure each day. The Counting of the Omer is an awareness-raising practice for assessing each day. This counting may be seen an invitation to focus, in a meaningful way, on a particular habit, behaviour, or quality within ourselves that we want to change or improve. As well, the journey from Passover - the movement away from a deeply oppressive experience – to Shavuot – the movement towards freedom and revelation – reminds us that both the journey and the destination are important. Counting the days teaches us to not just focus on what lies ahead, but also makes us aware of the vital gift that is each and every precious moment on the journey. ... See MoreSee Less
